HOW FAR DO YOU KNOW RED FRUIT? ( PART I )

Red Fruit = Buah Merah (Merah = Red, Buah = Fruit) plants are found among the density of tropical forest, spread within cool mountain climate on 2000-3000 meters above sea level in Papua (Indonesia). The Latin name of this plants is Pandanus Conoideus Lam. Red fruit is well known to some Papua tribes. It is cooked and consumed as an additional food.

Red fruit which formerly used for pig’s food or grow wildly at Papua forest, now is becoming familiar and expensive. Red fruit is typical plant or endemic which grow at Papua island. Red fruit is included in pandanus family, but it has 16m height with free stand limp 5 until 8 m height supported with rhizome at lower limp. Fruit shape is oval and its bud covered with fruit leaves. Red fruit is 55 cm - 100 cm long, 10-15 cm diameter, and 2-3 kg weight. It has bright maroon red color. Nevertheless a few of them are brown and yellowish brown color.

Traditionally, Papua people had consumed red fruit, either those who live in shore or mountain area. Other than as food source, they had used red fruit as food natural color and craft industry materials. Traditional people also recognized red fruit as medicine, but only to cure intestinal worm, skin disease, and to prevent blindness. In addition, they also recognized red fruit to increase energy

Even though with no single piece of cloth covered up their body, the people were able to survive living at a very cool temperature circumstance -20ÂșC- even at night. Women who consumed red fruit oil will recover soon after delivered baby. A mother who suckled baby traditionally had to consume red fruit oil to increase quality of mother’s milk.

Even the Papua people have consumed red fruit since long time a go, until year 2000 no single of Papua people realized that red fruit oil is not only to cure intestinal worm, skin disease, and to increase energy. In fact, red fruit oil is able to cure degenerative diseases such as cancer, tumor, hearth, diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension, and stroke diseases. Furthermore, accompanied with consuming animal protein, red fruit oil is proven to slow down and kill HIV/AIDS virus.

The local peoples search the red fruit fruit in the deep rain forest in Papua island and ship the red fruit to other islands with the Kano.

They consumed red fruit mixed with vegetable, sago, sweet potato/cassava and meat. They used red fruit oil to preserve food like sago and meat. Meat that was poured with red fruit oil was still consumable until 1 month and sago which was poured with red fruit oil still consumable up to 1-2 years. Red fruit also used to produce sauce and oil. Food would be more delicious and good smell if the food was poured with red fruit oil.

Examination also found that red fruit could be processed to become good natural color source for food, industrial material and cosmetic.

The people also used red fruit as craft industry material. Leaves, bark, and root of red fruit plants could be used as fastener, seat base, and bed. In addition, the old leaf of red fruit plant was plaited become mat, while the young leaf used as substitute for cigarette pack.
